Current Research at the North Central Bird Obsevatory
Director Mark Newstrom:

The focus of Mark's research is the aging of Downy Woodpeckers (Picoides pubescens) and Hairy Woodpeckers (Picoides villosus) based on feather replacement symmetry and wing feather color. Data collected to this point suggest that these two species can be aged up to four years post hatching.

Director Roger Everhart

Roger's plan is to study molt timimg and breeding site fidelity of the Sedge Wren (Cistothorus platensis) in east-central Minnesota. This is a species of conservation concern throughout its range in the upper midwest according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
